The New Google EMEA Engineering Hub in Zurich is the largest google engineering center outside the US Head Quarter in Mountain View. The recently opened Google offices represent a new generation of office-work environment, it is based on detail research, guided by a psychologist into the functional and emotional need of the googlers. The resulting design is a distinctive, diverse, light and flexible workspace, which has been specifically developed to stimulate and support the googlers in their challenging and innovative work. the processes allow the googlers to influence, challenge and approve the design throughout the project which supplier them a direct sense of ownership of their Zurich office. The personal workspace is like a living area, as the research has shown, which needs to be functional and more neutral, in order to accommodate frequent staff rotation and growth. people will decorate their space according to personal taste and take it with them when moving.
The Zoogler engineer stackle some of the most interesting challenges in computing today. as many of the teams in Zurich work together with Google teams all over the world, meeting room fitted with video conferencing equipment are very important. consequently there are a large number of small to medium-side meeting room situated throughout the office space. apart from the standard meeting rooms. there are also many informal meeting areas, which have a more relaxed atmosphere for teams to have creative discussion around white-boards. Some of them also incorporate the theme of the floor, like the Igloo Satellite Cabins with penguins and the original ski-gondolas in a snow-scape on the blue floor.
To provide an element of fun and speedy movement between floors “quick connections” were built comprising fire poles and slides to link the special areas with various groups and office. at the communal areas work can be combined with either fun and entertainment or relaxation. each communal area has a totally different atmosphere and offers everybody a choice to find a place according to their current needs.
One of the things found in the survey was the that the Google culture trends to revolve around three key points:open communication, creativity in every aspect, and food and fun!. get your head clear in completely different environment and start thinking about your current project form a different angle. Food is very important to Google and the Zurich office is no exception. The Milliways cafeteria serves free breakfast, lunch and dinner and the chefs use only fresh, high quality ingredients and local produce to make healthy delicious food. Coming together for eating is also a great opportunity for the Zooglers to meet and talk to people they don’t work directly with. To balance the good food, a staffed gym offers yoga, Pilates and fitness classes and encourages the Zooglers to keep fit and healthy.
